Statistical Analysis and Consulting

Services

Dr. Oggins can help you develop your research and statistical plan, and then help analyze and/or present your data so that you understand the findings. She also helps with putting the data in tables, making charts (if needed), giving bullet points to use in writing data up for the Results (and/or working together by phone to write up findings), and revising the Methods section (if needed). She can also help you review for your proposal defense and final dissertation defense; and can review and edit Powerpoint presentations too.

Research Design and Selection of Measures

  • Consider how to narrow down broad research interests to a specific topic;
  • Consider whether to do quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods research;
  • Consider what hypotheses to propose, what measures or questions to use, and how to collect your sample.
  • Review measures for value in addressing your specific questions, and how reliable or valid they are.
  • Help develop coding for qualitative data, including grounded theory coding.

Statistical Analysis and Prepare Work for Presentation or Publication

Help you use a variety of statistical techniques, including: basic frequencies, cross-tabulations with chi squares, t-tests, factor analysis; computing Cronbach's alpha; correlations, linear regression, logistic regression, hierarchical regression; ANOVA/ANCOVA, MANOVA/MANCOVA, repeated-measures ANOVA/ ANCOVA; nonparametric tests (e.g., binomial test, Mann-Whitney U, Friedman's rank test).

Use the appropriate statistical techniques to test your hypotheses;

  • Test for mediating or moderating effects (e.g., statistical interactions), if desired;
  • Use multivariate statistics to statistically control for demographic or other variables, and
  • Run nonparametric statistics if you have a small sample or data that are not normally distributed.

Getting an Estimate

  • For an estimate for consulting on research design and/or statistics, please send whatever you have written about your methodology in advance. That will help in seeing how much time you might need. At the beginning 1-2 hours is usually enough; this will include a brief period of time to review the material before the consultation.
  • For an estimate for consulting on coding themes, please send your methodology chapter and two transcripts. Usually 1-2 hours is enough time to help with this.
  • For an estimate for consulting for data analysis, please send your methodology chapter and (if possible) the data set itself. For assistance in analyzing, tabling, and writing up data, at least several hours are needed (e.g., 4-8 hours, and more for complicated projects), depending on how many variables and hypotheses you have and the complexity of your research design. Time on the phone and on e-mail to answer questions are counted as consulting time.

If your estimate looks OK to you, you will be asked to send your consulting payment in advance. Within three days after payment clears, consultation will be provided for that amount of time by phone and/or e-mail.

Paying for Services

The consulting/analysis rate is $60/hour. Clients are asked to pay in advance based on the estimate provided. Payment may be made by Zelle electronic transfer, Moneygram or Western Union, or by money order. Dr. Oggins will return analyzed work or schedule a consultation within 3 days of your payment's clearing.
